“Enlightening the world, one sip and one page at a time…”
That’s the dream of co-owners Cindy Collins and Angie Keyes at The Reading Grounds bookstore/coffeehouse in midtown Omaha .
“Books and coffee offer the perfect setting for a diverse community like midtown,” says Collins. “We like to say we are ‘brewing attitudes’ by providing books that stimulate ideas and gourmet coffees/desserts to entice customers to socialize and relax.”
The owners saw a need for a GLBT-friendly place where people could come for support —for themselves, their families or their peers—through books, a caring knowledgeable staff, and a Community Resource Area containing free information on groups, organizations, professionals, and Omaha events.
“We’re about bringing people from all backgrounds and beliefs together,” adds Collins. We reach out to the community with free live music, art shows, author events, open mic poetry, and educational workshops.” Often events revolve around midtown’s Native American, African American, Latino, and gay community interests or are about awareness of issues like domestic abuse or AIDS .
The Reading Grounds offers new and used books including bestsellers and is located on the corner of 40th & Farnam Sts., www.readinggrounds.com , 402-502-2008 , open Tues-Sat 9am-8pm.
