I regularly plug what Jamie Notter has to say and I am developing a professional crush on him I guess…he has just put up another good post:

The People Side of Business (where we still have a great deal of work to do and there is tremendous opportunity)

We’re squeezing efficiency out of everything, and I think we’ll find more and more that improving the human side of organizations will start to generate relatively more productivity as compared to what we can get out of process, or technology, or equipment.

I think the most competitive organizations are going to be the ones who figure out how to build on-the-job learning programs focused on the people side of organizations.

I also continue to become a bigger fan of the HR Bartender, and I really like this post, which is a couple of weeks old, but a good read.

I Don’t Know

News Flash: management is not expected to know everything. Sure, they need to know a lot…but not everything. So, managers need to get themselves comfortable with saying, “I don’t know, but let me find out.”

I am not in complete agreement with this post, but I always appreciate the perspective of John Sumser. He is another person that I read regularly.

Retention Doesn’t Work

Good, strategic workforce planning is virtually nonexistent. Instead of accurately knowing and describing the specifics of our workforces, we rely on tired generalizations. We want to manage attrition down and become the “employer of choice”. In other words, our HR Departments lead us down the primrose path and make our organizations home to people who retire in place.

It should be no surprise that we have downturns. Preparing for them, hiring wisely and continually pruning the organization is the right way to approach the problem. Too few hands always leads to greater productivity.

Maren Hogan always has something interesting to say and despite the fact that she has been whirlwinding about the planet lately, has a fresh post (and a good post) up that is on time and on point.

Consistency and Follow-Through: The two most underrated skills in business.

Networking is sh*t if you don’t follow up. I have so many business cards, I could paper a room with clever cards designed to “stand out” from the crowd and make me just utterly compelled to call you.

Branding is cr@p without consistency: You might find this odd coming from a woman who on any given day finds herself in the marketing, travel, recruiting, advertising, sponsor/conference, vendor, printing, design, fashion, finance and culinary worlds. But it’s true.

And finally, from CNN…a timely article regarding what I think will be a big part of the future of social networking, Ning.

Ning had 4.7 million unique visitors as of January and surpassed 1 million social networks — about one-fifth of them considered active — last month.
