December 20th, 2010
I am taking a social media holiday. If I can. Today is my last day for a while. Sort of…this is my plan:
Starting today (12.20.10) at 5pm CST today and lasting until 8am CST 01.10.11.
– no Twitter
-no blogging here, with the exception of a couple video posts (the obligatory “this is the year that was,” “holiday wishes,” and “this is the year that will be” stuff).
-no Facebook or LinkedIn.
I will still do some blogging at Talent Anarchy, and as I mentioned I will put a couple of video posts up here (which will generate a couple of Twitter updates), but that is all.
Why? Good question, I guess I have a couple of primary reasons for doing this:
- I like a good challenge. It might seem silly to some folks, but this will be difficult for me…especially the Twitter part. Twitter has brought a lot of new people and networks (and other stuff) into my life and I value those connections very much. It will not be that hard to not post on Twitter, but it will be very difficult to not follow the great stuff that the really, really, really smart and passionate people that I follow are constantly posting.
- Productivity and focus. I have some work to do. I am not suggesting that social media is not productive, it has been very valuable for me…but it is also where I tend to go when I am avoiding something or struggling with something that I am working on. I have some writing that I really need to get done during the holiday lull, and I think that I will get more done if I remove the social media option for a bit.
So. Thanks for reading, please plan on reading more in the new year and please subscribe to e-mail updates if you have not already done so. I hope 2010 was good to you and I hope that 2011 will be even better.
Wish me luck.
Be good to each other.
Joe, I wish you luck because you need your network to support your decision. I would add one thing though. Although social media and blogging do take time, the relationships I’ve made through both have turned into friendships. I can’t imagine turning those connections off completely for several weeks. Those are some of the people who support me the most. So, as your “social media” friend, I’ll support you in any way I can. I hope that you find focus and that you come back in 2011 refreshed and rejuvenated. Happy New Year!
Good luck, hope the DT’s don’t set in too bad. Really looking forward to working with you in the next year and beyond.
Totally agree Trish, and I certainly will not be turning off any relationships…just going to temporarily turn off a few of the tools that I use.
Joe-
Although I think social medias are great tools, do the stuff you desire to do, the stuff you NEED to do. I see a book in your future! 🙂
