the view from my desk
It has been far too long since I have posted here. I am working on a series on inclusion that will start here this week, but today I am just going to express some gratitude. Sometimes I get a little caught up in the challenges of my work. I think about how having work that involves a lot of travel can really suck, especially when you really, really like your family. I think about how hard it is to figure out how to grow your business by yourself, about how bad I am at the paperwork and record keeping of running a business. I gaze at my navel and wonder if I am making a difference, I start to think that after 7 years of doing this I might need to grow up a little and develop a business plan or something.
And then I look around.
It is 11:05am on a Tuesday, and I am in flip-flops, shorts and a t-shirt. It is a perfectly still spring morning in Omaha and I am working on a table in our backyard; my dog is at my feet. This is my office today.
Just a few weeks ago, I got to spend a few days in the beautiful Oakland/San Francisco area and deliver the opening keynote for HR West, doing what I love to do. Such a great trip, and such a great conference. I even kicked things off with a bit of yoga and chanting…maybe a first for an HR conference? I also got to hang out a bit with the lovely and talented Heather Bussing, who took some great photos for me.
Last week, I got to work with my best friend in delivering a message at one of the coolest corporate events we have been a part of.
I do have a hard time keeping up with my writing, especially my blogging. I do really hate business travel sometimes. My inbox is a trainwreck, these things are all true.
But, man, I am so incredibly lucky.
Be good to each other.
